Summer Camp Week 5: Creativity & Connection

Week 5 at LIFRC Summer Camp was full of colorful, hands-on creativity! Campers explored splatter painting, tie-dye, and ice art, letting their imaginations run wild and discovering the joy of making something uniquely their own. Wool art workshops were a hit, with campers creating pouches and learning to knit small animals—bunnies, kitties, and more—celebrating the magic of bringing ideas to life, one stitch at a time.

We were excited to welcome a special visitor this week: The Read-a-Rama director Dr. Michelle Martin who shared new camp songs that had everyone singing, dancing and laughing out loud. We’re so thankful for her guidance and support—it reminds us how much we grow when we share knowledge and creativity with one another.

Phil, an external observer, also visited the camp, offering thoughtful feedback on what’s going well and ways we can keep getting better. These insights help us make camp even more engaging and enriching for everyone.

Read-a-Rama this week was just as inspiring as our arts and crafts. We read The First Blade of Sweet Grass, exploring themes of generational knowledge—what we learn from our elders and pass on to the next generation. Campers reflected on this lesson while making woven bookmarks, connecting the story to a hands-on craft.

In Drawn Together, a boy and his grandfather showed that connection doesn’t always require shared language. Campers echoed this by building bridges in teams and creating shared artwork, discovering the power of collaboration.

Finally, Woodpecker Girl reminded us that determination and creativity allow us to achieve anything we set our minds to, even if our approach looks different from others. Campers left this week inspired to try new things, take risks, and celebrate their individuality.

Week 5 at LIFRC Summer Camp was a joyful mix of art, music, stories, and teamwork. Every camper, every day, discovered something new about themselves, each other, and the joy of learning together.
