Summer Camp Week 4: Spoons, Spells, and Stories!

Our fourth week of summer camp was a true feast for the senses—filled with delicious smells, bursts of imagination, and plenty of laughter.

Campers rolled up their sleeves in the kitchen, creating their own personal pizzas, assembling colorful charcuterie boards, and mixing up batches of chocolate chip cookie dough to take home and bake with their families. The highlight? Making ice cream the old-fashioned way—no machines here, just good old-fashioned muscle power and teamwork.

Over in the Dungeons and Dragons Camp for middle schoolers, creativity was in full swing. Campers dove into epic stories and games, each crafting a personalized “bag of holding” to carry their D&D treasures. They also built customized cardboard “dice towers” to make every roll of the dice just a little more exciting.

In Read-a-Rama, the stories were just as engaging as the snacks. Campers laughed their way through Pete’s a Pizza, a silly story about a dad who turns his son into a “pizza” to cheer him up. Some thought the tossing-and-pulling part sounded like a blast, while others weren’t so sure. When the main character’s father said it was time for the pizza to be put in the oven, one camper exclaimed, “Wait, is he going to get put in the real*oven??” Spoiler alert, it was just the couch cushions. Along the way, we talked about yeast and sugar, and even watched the bubbly magic happen as part of our own pizza dough-making process.

We also traveled the world through food with Dumplings for Lili, exploring all the delicious ways different cultures make dumplings. Finally, carrying on with their fractured fairy tale adventures, we read a playful spin on theatre week’s spotlight story: The Little Red Hen

Week 4 was another vibrant chapter in our summer—full of stories, connection, and the joy that happens when our community’s young people come together to learn, try new things, and make memories. And with two more weeks still ahead, we’re excited to see even more moments of growth, laughter, and discovery unfold.
