A Statement from Lopez Island Family Resource Center
We want to help clarify recent conversations regarding Lopez Rec and LIFRC’s after school and summer programs.
First and foremost, LIFRC supports the effort to approve a levy for the Lopez Island Parks & Recreation District. Voters approved formation of the District in November, and a revised levy will appear on the April 2026 special election ballot. Until a levy is approved, the district has no operating funds.
At its heart, this levy conversation is about budgeting for the future of youth and recreation programming on Lopez.
We believe there is broad agreement across our community on several key points:
- A new, sustainable local funding source is needed to ensure continued programming.
- Out-of-school care is an essential service that supports youth, working families, and our broader economy.
- Programming will benefit from strong collaboration and partnership.
- Implementation will evolve thoughtfully over time through ongoing coordination.
LIFRC currently operates after school and summer programs through a five-year 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from OSPI, providing approximately $333,000 annually through August 2027. This competitive funding covers most core costs and requires additional local fundraising each year to support snacks, supplies, and inclusive programming, including camps for youth with disabilities.
Looking ahead, we see meaningful opportunities.
A funded Parks & Recreation District could provide local matching dollars for LIFRC’s after school and summer programs. This would strengthen future LIFRC grant applications and help ensure programming continues beyond 2027. LIFRC has a strong track record of leveraging public and private funds to sustain high-quality, inclusive programs. Working in partnership allows us to maximize public investment and build long-term stability.
This is not a conversation about duplication or immediate program transfer. It is about how we, as a community, plan responsibly for the future.
Lopez is strongest when organizations align their efforts. We remain committed to collaborating with the Lopez Rec commissioners and community partners to build a coordinated, sustainable system that serves youth, families, and the island for years to come.
Signed,
LIFRC Board
