Strengthening Island Security
Preparing for disruptions to vital supports
Across the country — and right here at home — families are preparing for disruptions if the government shutdown continues after October 31st. This includes elimination/reduction of federal food benefits like SNAP and WIC but also includes having only one health insurance option in San Juan County through the health exchange, and sharp increases of health insurance premiums and annual deductibles. These programs are essential for many Lopez households, helping parents, elders, and working families keep nutritious food on the table and to obtain the health care they need.
Filling the Gaps
LIFRC wants to assure the community that food security is a priority, and we are actively working to support households that are affected and budgeting for these additional supports. According to our data, there are currently 96 households receiving SNAP and WIC on Lopez Island. The best way the community can help is by donating to our Year End Appeal to help us raise the remaining $320,000 needed for 2025. To make a donation simply click here.
What Are We Doing?
LIFRC is resolute in our efforts to make sure people have the food they need today and in the future. We continue to work for programs and policies that serve our community. Partner agencies across San Juan County have come together to prepare for the possible stoppage of SNAP food benefits scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025. Local Food Banks and Pantries, Resource Centers, Community Foundations, and San Juan County public health staff are collaborating to coordinate food access efforts and strengthen support for our community.
Specifically, LIFRC will be:
- Coordinating with households who receive WIC and SNAP to address their food needs.
- Receiving supplemental funding and/or donated food from the food bank system that Governor Ferguson is prioritizing for Washington State.
- Using community donations to purchase additional food to distribute at the Food Share, including baby formula and other essentials.
- Expanding Food Share hours and delivery services for those unable to shop in person.
- Helping individuals losing their health insurance or with high insurance premium increases find additional support so they can pay their household bills.
- Exploring other innovative options with the County partnership group.
Every day, new challenges and new solutions unfold. We will do our best to keep the community informed.

How Can You Help This Harvest Season?
- Donate to LIFRC’s Year End Appeal Campaign. This way we can assure we have enough funds to fully support households in need.
- Make Thanksgiving Sweeter for your neighbors. Donate a pie! Bring your pies to the Family Resource Center, located at 23 Pear Tree Lane, Tuesday, Nov 25th from 10am-2pm
Together, we can turn compassion into action — ensuring that as we gather for the holidays, every table on Lopez is filled with good food and good company. The harvest season may be ending, but the work of feeding and caring for one another continues. Thank you, Lopez, for continually showing what community really means.
