Week 6 at LIFRC Summer Camp: Splashing, Stretching and Stories

Our sixth and final week at this year’s Summer Camp was full of movement, learning, and outdoor fun! With a heat wave kicking off the week, we jumped right into water games to cool off after lots of sun-soaked activities. Campers enjoyed plenty of outdoor time, games, and yoga, keeping active and energized even in the summer heat.

This week we introduced two new workshops: Intro to First Aid led by the Fire Department and Junior Tennis & Pickleball, coached by the Lopez Island Community Tennis Association. Campers learned practical skills, developed new hobbies, and had a blast trying something new.

We also hosted a two-day Conservation workshop at Odlin Park, instructed by the Youth Conservation Corps. These hands-on experiences helped campers connect with nature, community, and teamwork.

Read-a- Rama this week celebrated perseverance, endurance, and heritage. We read The Floating Field, the story of a group of Thai boys who built their own soccer field—one that could still be played on even when floods came. In Daughter of the Light-Footed People, campers were inspired by a girl running long distances in her traditional Indigenous dress, learning about dedication and cultural pride. Both of these nonfiction stories sparked curiosity and admiration among campers, who celebrated the real-life achievements and resilience of others.

The week wrapped up with Koala Lou, a sweet fictional story from Australia about trying your best and practicing good sportsmanship. It was a perfect reminder that effort, kindness, and teamwork are as important as skill and success.

Our final week of Summer Camp was an exciting mix of fitness, skill-building, outdoor adventures, and stories that inspired campers to persevere, explore, and celebrate both themselves and the world around them.

Now the team is gearing up for another year of After-School programming. Start dates have yet to be confirmed but stay-tuned for information about registration!
