Week One of Camp: Music, Movement, and Making Memories!

The first week of the Lopez Island Family Resource Center’s out-of-school program flew by in a flurry of color, sound, and summer joy!

Campers kicked off the season with music-themed creativity and hands-on fun. From crafting tin can drums and box guitars to designing their own kazoos, the rhythm of the week was all about imagination and play. We explored sound science too—watching rice and beans “dance” as we observed how sound waves travel, and building our own paddle boats, inspired by one of the books we read.

As always, literacy was a central part of our days. Through Read a Rama, our story-based literacy program that meets three times a week, kids read books like Talkin’ Guitar, Mama Don’t Allow, and Listen, followed by hands-on activities to bring the stories to life. It’s a joy to see books open doors to creativity, discovery, and connection.

Beyond the books and instruments, the week was filled with dancing, cooperative games, climbing trees -Thank you AdventureTerra staff for an amazing week- and lots of laughter with friends new and old.

We’re already looking ahead to another amazing week, with four full camps running: Wilderness Explorers, BuildAbility, Coding Camp, and Culinary Camp.

While all sessions are currently full, we invite the whole community to stop by next week for a special visit from the BurkeMobile, featuring a geology and paleontology-themed traveling exhibit.

Summer is off to a strong start—and we’re just getting warmed up.
