Supporting Strong Readers

Learning to read is an exciting and foundational skill that can open up a world of knowledge and adventure. However, it isn’t necessarily easy. We start by learning the letters, each with its individual sounds. Committing them to memory, we then pair those sounds, slowly blending part by part until sounds become words. There are sight words to memorize and sentence structures to absorb, but eventually, and quite miraculously, meaning begins to shine through.

Since its inception in the summer of 2022, our Literacy Intervention Program has been dedicated to supporting students on their journey toward becoming stronger readers. Working with students throughout the school year, this evidence-based, multi-sensory curriculum goes beyond traditional methods, helping students who are often one to two years behind grade level.

This school year, six literacy interventionists served twelve students, providing one-on-one sessions three days a week. These sessions offered much more than academic guidance; they also fostered deep emotional bonds. As one coach noted, “A child dragged going to sessions some days, but then, the last day came, and they were so upset it was the last day!” This emotional investment speaks volumes about the program’s impact.

The results are evident. Students have shown growth in all skill areas, from phonological awareness and letter recognition to phonics patterns and comprehension. More importantly, they have discovered a love for reading.

“One child, who initially sounded out every single word,” said one coach, “ended the year reading chapter books!” This progress is a testament to the hard work and resilience of the Lopez Island students and the unwavering support of their coaches.

We are incredibly proud of the strides our students have made and are committed to continuing this vital work. Your support is essential in helping us maintain and expand this program. Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed and feel confident in their reading abilities.

Thank you for being a part of our community and for supporting our mission.
