Readiness To Learn (RTL) is a state program delivered through 28 local community consortia. RTL’s efforts fall into four principal domains intended to reduce barriers to academic risk:
- Increasing access to basic needs
- Creating supports for academic learning
- Addressing health care access and problem resolution
- Creating social-emotional supports for children and families in distress.
RTL programs differ in their emphasis across these four service themes resulting in a range of interventions operating from a common set of values.
Lopez received its first RTL grant in 1997. Since then we have joined forces with Orcas and San Juan to create the San Juan Island Readiness To Learn consortium. The mission of the Readiness To Learn program is to create a committed, continuing partnerships among schools, families, and communities that provide opportunities for all young people to achieve at their highest learning potential; live in a safe, healthy, and civil environment; and grow into productive community members. Readiness To Learn works closely with Lopez School personnel, local community organizations, and families to create a collaborative, connected team that supports and advocates for students and families. Our RTL grant funds a family advocate position at Lopez School. Our RTL coordinator is Mikah Smith.
